Grass Heads
Growing grass heads (or seed heads) is a fun activity for children to celebrate the coming of spring. If they remember to keep them watered then they'll sprout in no time. What you will need: cotton wool or sawdust a disposable kitchen cloth or old stocking a rubber band or string bird seed a jar water spray bottle light cardboard marker pens scissors pins or wood glue Draw some facial features on the cardboard with the marker pens. You'll need two eyes, a nose and a mouth. Cut them out. Make a ball out of the cotton wool or sawdust (about 10 cm or 4 inches diameter). Dampen thoroughly to hold together. Roll the ball in the bird seed but leave an area for the face. However, you do want a beard! Press the seed firmly into the ball. Carefully place the ball into the stocking or disposable kitchen cloth. Tie it at the neck with string or a rubber band. Attach your facial features with some pins or wood glue. Fill the jar with water and place seed head on the top allowing the ends of the cloth or stocking to drop into the water. This will help to keep the seed head moist. Spray your seed head with water (use a spray bottle) each day. As your grass head grows you may need to give it a haircut! Other ideas.... Use empty egg shells (hard boil an egg, cut off the top, carefully scoop out the insides and thoroughly clean it). Place cotton wool in shells, sprinkle seeds on top and keep moist. Keep the egg in an egg cup or egg carton. Draw a face on to the egg shells. Cut off the top and bottom of a potato. Scoop out a deep hole in the top of the potato. Place cotton wool in the potato, sprinkle with seeds and keep moist.
