A Child's Very Own Garden Patch Allow each child to dig a small garden patch of their very own (or give them a large wooden crate or tub each) for their own gardens. They can choose to plant flowers in it or they might like to plant vegetables or herbs.
Take a visit to a local nursery and allow each child to buy a punnet of seedlings for their own special garden. They then take the responsibility of planting and watering their garden.
Try these vegetables - silverbeet or spinach, rhubarb, strawberries, lettuce. Cherry tomatoes are fun to grow but will need a stake to support the stem. Potatoes and onions can be planted from any old ones that have started sprouting.
Herbs such as parsley, chives and oregano are easy to grow.
Make sure their gardens can get at least 6 hours of sunlight each day.
When the vegetables are ready the children can pick their produce and wash, prepare and cook it for the whole family to enjoy. Return to Top
An Herb Garden Herbs are so easy to grow and can be grown in small pots on a windowsill or the back verandah.
Give each child their own potted herb to water and look after. They will really enjoy using their herbs in cooking.
