Sunflower Fort

A sunflower fort is a fun gardening activity for the whole family which will be enjoyed for many months to come. Begin this activity in spring and enjoy it come summertime!

What you will need:

A Square garden patch, the minimum size should be 6' x 6' (1.8mx1.8m), however you can make it much larger
    String
    Shovel
    Garden stakes
Several packets of sunflower seeds (you must use tall ones but you can have a shorter variety growing in between as well)

Measure out your square garden patch. Dig the ground around the edges to a depth of approximately 1 foot (30cm).

Hammer garden stakes in at each corner. Work out where you would like your door and put two stakes there as well. (Don't plant any seeds there!)

Tie string to one stake in the doorway and run it around the garden posts to the other doorway (leave doorway free of the string). This will help you plants your seeds in a straight line.

Follow the directions on the seed packet to show you how to plant your seeds.

Water your seeds very regularly and then watch them grow! It will take about 10 - 12 weeks for your fort to grow.

Idea: You could leave the floor on your fort grass but you will need to mow it. Why not put down a load of bark chips or sand on the floor. The children could use it to play in.

Idea: If you have enough space, why don't you design your fort as a maze?
